Frequently Asked Questions – About VIRTUS, Risk Control, and NCS

What is VIRTUS?

The VIRTUS programs constitute the foundation and superstructure of all the risk control initiatives undertaken by TNCRRG/National Catholic Services, LLC on behalf of the Church and the communities within which the Church ministers. The VIRTUS programs are the most widely utilized and highly awarded safe environment program tools presently employed by the Church – and by a very wide margin.

What is Risk Control?

Risk Control is that element of risk management that directs itself to the prevention of losses, damages, and/or wrongdoing (an activity referred to as loss prevention) before these can occur and to the mitigation of the severity of losses, damages, and/or wrongdoing that simply could not be prevented (an activity referred to as loss control).

Who Developed, Owns, Finances and Promulgates the VIRTUS Programs?

The VIRTUS programs have been developed, are owned, are financed and are promulgated by The National Catholic Risk Retention Group, Inc. (TNCRRG) and its subsidiary management company, National Catholic Services, LLC.

What is National Catholic Services, LLC (NCS)?

NCS, formed March 8, 2000, is a wholly owned subsidiary of TNCRRG and for tax purposes has been ruled a “disregarded entity” by the IRS.

NCS is governed by a five person Board of Governors (BOG), appointed by the TNCRRG Board of Directors. The Vice President of the TNCRRG Board is usually selected as the Chair of the NCS Board of Governors.

NCS “houses” all employees and provides underwriting, claims management, risk control, broker management, VIRTUS® and executive management services to TNCRRG.

NCS functions on a “break-even” basis, charging a management fee to TNCRRG that exactly matches NCS expenses to provide services.
